Sensitivity in your teeth from eating hot or cold food and drinks can be a serious cause for concern. It’s a good idea to investigate the underlying cause of the sensitivity to resolve a small problem before it has the chance to escalate.
Fractures and tooth decay are common causes of tooth sensitivity. However if you enjoy eating acidic foods and beverages or you have struggled in the past with an eating disorder, there is a chance your sensitivity issues can be related to enamel erosion. In a situation like this you should talk to your dentist about the most effective options for managing the issues.
Minor to moderate enamel erosion can sometimes be resolved by fluoride gel treatments. The fluoride gel is poured into trays and held in your mouth for a short period of time. This can help by increasing the remineralization of the crystalline structures that make up your tooth enamel. In some cases your dentist or doctor can also prescribe fluoride supplements or gel you can use at home.
You could also try switching to a brand of toothpaste for people with sensitive teeth. Just be sure to select one with added fluoride and that has earned the ADA seal of acceptance. Some brands of antiseptic mouthwash also come with added fluoride.
If it is left untreated, acid erosion can cause teeth to fail or need replacing with crowns. So, you will need to address the behavior that caused the initial enamel erosion.
