Ideally, you should take time to visit your dentist every six months for your routine cleaning and exam. During those visits, your dentist will remove the plaque and tartar from your teeth that you did not get with your toothbrush, and check your mouth for cavities, tooth damage, oral cancer, and gum disease.
Every person is different, and your dentist may want to see you more than twice a year if you have a condition or problem that deserves attention. As you age, your dental needs will change, and your dentist may want to see you on a more frequent basis.
A lost crown or filling needs a dentist’s attention, and you should contact the dentist if you lose, chip, crack, or break a tooth.
If you are thinking about having a baby, you should schedule a visit with your dentist. If you have become pregnant, a visit to the dentist is a good idea, but ideally, dental visits should take place during your second trimester. When you start a new medication or receive a diagnosis from your doctor, you should let the dentist know.
If you have chronic headaches or pain in your jaw, the problem may be related to teeth clenching or grinding, a condition known as bruxism. You may also be suffering from temporomandibular disorder, a condition of the jaws. This is a sign you should contact the dentist.
You should give your dentist a call anytime that you notice a change in the color, texture of a tooth, your gums or your tongue. If you have a dry, sticky mouth; persistent or recurrent pain in your teeth, swollen or bleeding gums; or chronic bad breath, it is time to call the dentist.
