You probably know that there are a number of things you should do if you’re interested in keeping your teeth healthy. For instance, you probably know that you should brush and floss your teeth. However, would you be surprised to learn you may have been told a few things that aren’t completely true?

For example, you may have heard that sugar can cause cavities. You see, sugar can play a role in tooth decay, but cavities are actually caused by plaque buildup on your teeth and bad bacteria eating away at your enamel. Sugar can create an environment where bad bacteria can thrive, but it is not the cause of cavities.

Similarly, you may have heard that gum disease isn’t very common. Unfortunately, gum disease is fairly common, and many Americans may not recognize the issue. In fact, nearly 47% of adults over the age of 30 have some sort of gum disease.

Finally, have you ever been told that pregnant women shouldn’t worry about bleeding gums? In reality, this myth is dangerous. Bleeding gums could be an indicator of an infection in your mouth. If this isn’t treated, your health could suffer. This issue has even been linked to pregnancy problems and to preterm labor.
